9/2 :: Jeff Hart @ LA C# :: Intro to WPF Data Binding
Seen the demos? Tired of pointless examples putting a spinning video in a gel button for a menu item? (OK that’s cool to some but why would you do it?) Wondering when’s the right time to start writing real business applications in WPF? In this talk we’ll get you started with WPF and end by examining the critical question: has Microsoft finally “got it right” with its binding model for Windows Presentation Foundation? Time permitting, our agenda will include :
-
Why you might want to data bind
-
An intro to dependency properties
-
The code you’ll need to write to support data binding to your business objects
-
Ways to use LInQ to SQL (and even Entity Framework) to persist your data bound objects
Jeff has been developing for more decades than he cares to admit—and yes that means he started on an IBM 360/135 in high school and picked his college based on not having to use punched cards (His alma matter’s mainframe was one of the first in the country to use CRTs to show you images of punched cards). He became hooked on OO principles after reading the seminal 1982 issue of Byte magazine devoted to Smalltalk—even playing with that language (which is about all you could do with it). When Java first hit, he spent a couple of years with it but when he first saw .NET at the 2000 PDC in Orlando he formally “converted.” Since that time most of his development work has been in .NET, where he practices a language-agnostic approach… as long as it’s .NET.
AAs the “alpha geek” for Vanishing Clouds, Jeff spends his days fighting system admin dragons but his nights still belong to development. His current passions include applying TDD and generational methods to n-tier architectures. For the past several years Jeff has been active in several local dev user groups.
